Travel for Students

NorFA will cover travel expenses for the students, provided they travel by the cheapest route (using bus, train, ferry) or by plane if only a student (discount) airfare is within limits.

For travel from Oslo, Copenhagen, Lund, and Stockholm, there is a possibility to use the ferry "Palanga" from Karlsham (departure 19:00) to Klaipeda (arrival 9:00) where you can make a quick change to bus for Vilnius (departure from Klaipeda 11:45, arrival in Vilnius 16:45). The ferry passenger fare from Karlsham to Klaipeda is about 120 EUR (berth) or 67 EUR (tourist class). The bus fare from Klaipeda to Vilnius is about 11 EUR.
The ferry "Palanga" runs on Monday, Wednesday, Friday from Karlsham and Saturday,  Tuesday from Palanga.

There are also two trains from Klaipeda to Vilnius: "Pajuris" (departure 6:30, arrival 11:30) and "Baltija" (departure 17:50, arrival 22:50). The train fare is 11 EUR.

There exist also a ferry Stocholm-Riga , which runs every second day, and with a connecting bus from Stocholm Central Station. Unfortunately, the schedule for August is not yet decided. We assume there may be a good bus connection from the ferry in Riga to Vilnius, since this ferry is advertised by big posters all over Vilnius as the opportunity for young people to cross the Baltic. When we know the shedule for August this will be posted here. This ferry may be conveniant for participants from Sweden and Norway.

Note that NorFA can cover only the basic cost of a student ticket and not the extra nights spent on the travel, so a student airfare would most likely be the least expensive solution. As an example, a student round-trip ticket Oslo-Vilnius is EUR 300, and it should be even less when flying from Copenhagen and Stockholm.

For the students from Oulu, Turku, and Helsinki we recommend the ferry to Tallinn and from there the bus to Vilnius, leaving Tallinn 22:45 and arriving in Vilnius 8:30. The bus Tallin-Vilnius fare is 26 EUR. More information about buses you can find here.

From St. Petersburg, the train Sankt Peterburg - Kaliningrad is recommended: departure from St. Petersburg 05:06 PM,
arrival in Vilnius 5:00 AM. More information you can find here: train Sankt Peterburg-Kaliningrad and train Sankt Peterburg-Lviv.

We are ready to meet you and bring to the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy (ITPA). From the Institute you will be taken  to the Moletai Astronomical observatory. The LOC kindly asks all participants to inform about the date, time and place (train/bus station, airport) of arival and departure.

We expect the students to arrive in Vilnius on Sunday, August 11, before 17:00 when the transportation to the Moletai Observatory will be arranged. Departure is scheduled for Sunday morning, August 25: a bus to Vilnius leaves the Moletai Observatory at about 10:00, the time convenient for departures from Vilnius at 12:00 and later.
